How to set UNC share folder permissions for the Webtrends service account under Windows XP/2003

Cause

To set up a UNC share under Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, edit the Sharing and Security permissions for the UNC share folder.

Resolution

To edit the permissions:
1. Browse the Network and locate the desired folder.

2. Right-click on the folder and select “Properties.”

3. Select the “Sharing” tab, then click “Share this folder” (Windows XP/Windows Server 2003) and enter the share name, a comment (if necessary), and designate the user limit.

4. Click “Permissions.” The share permissions window displays.

5a. Select the Webtrends service account in the upper pane and specify “Full Control” from the permissions in the lower pane.

5b. If the Webtrends service account is not listed click “Add…” The “Select Users, Computers, or Groups” window displays. If the domain is not selected under the “From This Location:” field, click “Locations…” and select the proper domain. Type the service account name in the “Enter the object names to select” textbox and click “Check Names” to find the account on the domain. Select the account name from the “Group or user names:” pane and check “Full Control” under “Allow” in the Permissions pane.

6. Click “Apply” and “OK” to apply the change.

7. On the “Security” tab, if the Webtrends service account is not listed explicitly by name, click “Add…” The “Select Users, Computers, or Groups” window displays. If the domain is not selected under the “From This Location:” field, click “Locations…” and select the proper domain. Type the service account name in the “Enter the object names to select” textbox and click “Check Names” to find the account on the domain. Select the account name from the “Group or user names:” pane and check “Full Control” under “Allow” in the Permissions pane.

8. Click “Apply” and “OK” to apply the change.
