Why do visitor IDs have machine names in them?

Products

Webtrends Analytics 9.x
Webtrends Analytics 8.x

Issue

The profile’s data source uses web logs and session tracking is based on IP/User Agent. Visitor IDs appear as a combination of the machine name and the User Agent rather than IP and User Agent.

Cause

This occurs when DNS lookup is enabled on the profile. DNS lookup causes IP addresses to be resolved to DNS names, if possible, so rather than 192.168.1.110, the visitor ID may resolve to something like machine01.mycompany.corp.

Resolution

DNS lookup can be enabled or disabled globally by navigating to “Web Analysis” > “Options” > “Analysis” > “Internet Resolution,” or for individual profiles by editing the profile and navigating to “Analysis” > “Internet Resolution.”
