Webtrends cannot connect because the database you specified uses the default instance with a dynamic port.

Issue

When performing a new installation of Webtrends Analytics 8.7d or 9.x using an existing installation of SQL, the following error displays:

“Webtrends cannot connect because the database you specified uses the default instance with a dynamic port. Please select a database that uses a named instance and/or a static port.”

Resolution

1. Turn off the Firewall on the Windows 2008 or 2003 server on which the installation is taking place.

2. Go into SQL Server configuration manager, expand SQL Server Network Configuration and select “Protocols for MSSQLSERVER” (or the name that the database or instance is called). Enable TCP/IP, save the settings and restart the SQL service.

3. Verify the default instance is using a static port (if being used), or switch to using a named instance, which is acceptable to use with a dynamic port.
