Cached search phrases appear in the referrer reports

Cause

When Google, or another search engine, caches archived pages or cached copies of a document, such as a .pdf, the search phrase will appear as a long cryptic string, derived from the referring URL recorded in the web logs. This occurs because the search engine refers back to its cached copy, rather than the original document. Presence of these search phrases indicate visitors chose to view a cached version rather than select the direct link to the site.
