User Account Control must be disabled to install Webtrends on Windows Server 2008

Products

Webtrends Analytics 8.7
Webtrends Analytics 9.2

Cause

When attempting to install Webtrends on Windows Server 2008 the installation fails returning an error code (1001, 1603) or a message about account restrictions.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, disable Windows’ User Account Control (UAC) by performing the steps below.

1. Select Start > Control Panel > User Accounts.

2. Select Change User Account Control settings and lower the slider to “Never notify,” which suggests that only notifications will not appear (while still leaving UAC enabled), but in fact disables UAC altogether.

3. Select OK, then restart the server for the change to take effect.

More Information

Windows 2008 R2 does not allow you to completely disable UAC via the Control Panel options. To completely disable UAC for Windows 2008 R2, modify the system registry. Back up the registry before proceeding:
1. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

2. Edit the key below as follows:
EnableLUA -Set this to “0” (off) instead of “1” (on)
3. Restart the server for the change to take effect.
