Issue
When creating or editing a custom dimension, the “When to measure” screen has an option to sum the measure across the visit. Some standard measures have this option selected by default, but it is not the appropriate setting for all situations.
Resolution
Use of this option is best explained through an example.
The attached log file contains a single visit with a series of hits which include a custom parameter, WT.test. This parameter has values of 1,2, 3 or 4. Also present on these same hits is the parameter WT.dim with values A, B, C or D.
A custom dimension is created, based on the parameter WT.dim, collecting data on all hits. In the custom report using this dimension, we expect to see the values A, B, C and listed.
Custom measures are created based on the parameter WT.test, collecting on all hits. On one measure, the option to “Sum across visit” is selected. Call this measure “WT.test – sum.” On the other measure, “WT.test – no sum,” the option is not selected.
The custom dimension and custom measures are added to a custom report and the profile is analyzed. Report data will appear as follows:

When “Sum across visit” is selected all of the measure totals are summed and apply to all specified dimensional values for that visit. When tracking hit based statistics this option will appear to have little value. However, there are times when this is relevant. For example, a report that displays revenue associated with referring sites will, when the option to “Sum across visit” is selected, display the total revenue for the entirety of each visit. If the option to “Sum across visit” is not selected, the only way to see accurate revenue totals would be if the purchases were made on the first hit to the site.
There are other examples where it is appropriate to use a “Sum across visit” measure, but most often the correct measure to use is going to be the ‘no sum’ option. As always, it is a best practice test custom reports with a sample log before deploying them to production profiles to ensure correct behavior and avoid the need for replays or reanalysis.
