Cause
Virus scanning software, and more specifically, live virus scanning can contribute to corruption of the Webtrends installation. A live virus scanner detects when a new file is saved to the system, or a file has been changed or rewritten. When it detects this activity, it immediately attempts to scan the file before a virus has the chance to do any damage. The virus scanner may at times put a read/write lock on the file during the scanning process. As Webtrends performs a large number of reads and writes during the analysis process, a live virus scanner attempting to scan the files being accessed can easily cause a read or write failure. This will result in incorrect data within the file, and consequently corrupt the integrity of the database. This same activity can affect the MySQL tables as they are changed, or any other configuration file that is modified by Webtrends.
Resolution
Under normal circumstances Webtrends recommends excluding the entire Webtrends directories from being scanned as it will prevent anti-virus software from causing corruption. We realize that in high security environments this is not always practical. To prevent corruption and still meet the requirement of having the Webtrends directory actively scanned, Webtrends recommends that the following file types be excluded from active scanning inside the Webtrends folders.
