For products: Webtrends Log Analyzer 7.0c Webtrends Analysis Suite 7.0c
Last modified: 10/6/2010
Introduction: New Features and Enhancements Improved User Interface - Based on user input and research we have dramatically improved the configuration and use in the product's user interface. Improvements such as tree controls, more fluid flow, and a more intuitive design have greatly simplified and enabled the power of the Analysis Series.
Configuration Enhancements - Improvements have been made to many configuration settings for a greater range of reporting possibilities. User configurable Report Ranges using macros provide the ability to select any report range desired. FastTrends, DNS caches, and FTP caches all come equipped with the ability to schedule flushing to free up resources. The configuration and selection of saved report templates has become vastly more manageable in the newly revamped Reports dialogue. Users can now define Search Engines through the UI and Filters can be created based on other all ready prepared filters. Many more features have been made configurable for both global and per-profile activation. New samples have been provided throughout the product to demonstrate the new range of usability and analysis.
New Reports - Reports have been cleaned up and made more attractive. Legends are now neatly placed along table items.
New Start Of Week Setting - Under Options, users can now specify any day of the week as the start of the week in their particular region. This information is used during report generation.
New Time Zone Adjustment Per Profile - The Origin Time Zone specifies the time zone from which Webtrends should assume your log files originated if the log files do not specify otherwise. Most log file formats include the time zone of the server, and others, such as W3C format, are always in GMT. Those that do not specify and are not known to be GMT will be parsed using the Origin Time Zone setting. The Report Time Zone specifies the time zone in which the reports will be used. If either of these settings is changed, all existing FastTrends data for the profile must be deleted and regenerated.
Miscellaneous Changes Other changes to 7.0 include:
New Reports dialog
Enhanced Options dialog
Improved Limit Memory Usage dialog
Create filters based on existing filters
Use "Retrieve Page Titles" setting on a profile basis
Customizable search engines
Customizable Report Ranges
DNS resolution improvements
Documentation Addendum Recommended Upgrading - When upgrading from previous versions of Webtrends products, we recommend upgrading into a separate directory and migrating over your settings. Migration is available during the installation, as well as after, using the MigrationTool.exe in the root of the installation directory. If you have a valid subscription license, and you are attempting an upgrade from 5.0 to 7.0, but the earlier version is installed on a separate machine, follow these directions: Copy the installation directory from the separate machine to the machine 7.0 is to be installed on. Launch and close it so registry keys are set. Begin the 7.0 update and follow the instructions. To upgrade from 5.5 to 7.0 on a separate machine, you will need your 5.5 license number and a valid subscription (either version) but do not need to copy the old installation directory to the new machine.
Other Upgrading Issues - When upgrading. from Enterprise Suite version 5.0c or earlier, you will lose your cookie preferences. After successfully completing the installation of your upgrade, follow these instructions to configure cookie preferences: 1. From the main menu, select Options > Web Traffic Analysis Options. The Options window appears. 2. Select the Cookies tab. At this window you can configure your cookie options either globally or locally.
Webtrends' Plugins - These are no longer included as part of the install, but can be downloaded at http://www.webtrends.com/site_download/plugins.htm
FastTrends and Legacy Data - With the 7.0 series Limit Memory Usage has been expanded and improved. There is one caution and it has to do with limiting memory with reports on profiles with existing FastTrends data. If the user decreases memory use it will now display the "Delete FastTrends Database" dialog, because the configuration has changed the report content. Therefore, the data-set must be re-analyzed. If the user does not delete the FastTrends database the report can contain partial data. In this instance we use "???" for the missing values.
International Date Formats - Some regions do not follow standards for date formats for general regions. For example, Finish: d-M-yyyy; France: dd/MM/yyyy; Icelandic: d.M.yyyy; Malaysia: dd/MM/yyyy; Norwegian: dd.MM.yyyy; Portugal: dd-MM-yyyy Spain: dd/MM/yyyy; Swahili: M/d/yyyy; Swedish: yyyy-MM-dd. The log format drop-down list has been enhanced to reflect these differences.
False Denial of Service Attacks - If you have a profile set up with DNS Resolution, Enterprise Suite makes a call to the operating system to perform the lookup. If the operating system cannot resolve the IP address through the DNS server, it attempts to perform a lookup through NetBIOS for the machine name. The operating systems broadcasts this via port 137. If you are operating in a WAN environment, your backbone provider may see this as a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. To avoid this, configure your firewall to not allow packets on Port 137 outside your network. As a result, your backbone provider will never see the hits, and neither will other customers. You can also turn off DNS resolution by editing your profile. To do this: 1. Select the profile, and click Edit. 2. Select the DNS Tab and select Quick Mode. 3. Click OK to update your profile settings.
MAPI and Windows NT - MAPI e-mail action is not compatible with NT services. If you wish to e-mail reports and you are running Scheduler as a service, use SMTP mail rather than MAPI mail. RealServer 7.0 - Real Networks has a new log file format for RealServer 7.0 and higher. In prior versions, LoggingStyle=5 is recommended for optimal reporting. If you have RealServer 7.0 or higher, we recommend LoggingStyle=4 and changing StatsMask=3 to StatsMask=7. These settings can be found in the rmserver.cfg.
GeoTrends and the sample profiles - GeoTrends is designed to work with real world logs. Attempting to create a GeoTrends enabled profile analyzing the sample logs included in the product install will not result in a correct report, and will cause a long delay.
Known Issues
HTTPS Login failure - If you enter a User ID or Password incorrectly to access a log stored on an HTTPS server and then attempt to run the report (which will obviously fail), then you enter the correct User ID and Password and attempt. to run the report will again fail. You will need to close the application and restart it before the log will be successfully downloaded.
File browse on Windows XP is very slow - The first time you select a file by browsing using Analysis Suite, upon hitting OK, the user interface may freeze up for several seconds before it returns the path.
Excel 2000 report error - Report creation in Excel 2000 will not work if it contains custom macros. You will receive this error: Run-time error 424 Object required Log independent.
Foreign Language Support - Most, but not all, tables, statistics and help cards have been translated. A subsequent release will include all translations.
Installation Space Requirements - Microsoft Installer (MSI) requires a large amount of space on Windows and Temp volumes during the installation. In some cases MSI does not automatically clean up the temporary files it creates. After the install completes, it is safe to delete these temporary files.
Domino Actions Configuration - For the most accurate stats on Domino logs users must configure Domino Actions in File Types in Options.
Graphing and Word 97 - If you install Word 97 without installing the other components of Office 97, you may experience abnormalities in the size of the graphs. Upgrading to the full version of Office 2000 is the best known solution to this problem.
Graphing and Windows 98 - If you are using the original version of Windows 98 (Memphis) and experience problems generating graphs in any reports, in most cases Windows Critical Update will fix the problem. To update:
1. From the Start Menu select Windows Update.
2. Choose the Critical Update link on the page.
ChartFX Color Settings - The new ChartFX graphs require a color setting of 16-bit or greater for optimal look.
Windows 2000 Terminal Services - Windows 2000 Terminal Services is not supported. Terminal Services is limited to 256 Colors. There is no way to increase the color depth through Terminal Services, according to Microsoft it is by design. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q273725/ for more information. Also, there is no way to run the Scheduler as a service with Terminal Services, so Webtrends does not support it.
