Cause
There may be times when the dimension is not needed – the focus of the report is one row of measurements. For example:
- Measurements are exported to an external application and not having to process multiple rows externally is easier.
- The measurements are summary of a group of items segmented by a filter where the output is just one row for use in a dashboard.
However, all reports require a dimension. Where standard dimensions could create multiple rowsan empty dimension can be used.
Resolution
To create a one row report with an empty dimension
Create a dimension based on a parameter that does not exist.
1. In the Based On tab select Value to Base On: Query Parameter.
2. In the Parameter Name enter a value that will not occur on your site. For example, enter a parameter name of Parameter Name: this_does_not_exist.
3. Click the Advanced button.
4. Check the Override Default String box.
5. Enter text in the New String box that you want to show in the one line on the report. This text will replace where a report normally shows “None” when it does not locate the dimension item. This will be your row name.
6. In the When to Collect Data tab select All Hits.
Create a report using your new dimension.
1. In the Dimensions tab select the dimension created above.2. Make sure the Exclude activity without dimension data box is NOT checked.
3. Enter an appropriate name for the dimension column.
4. Select the measures you want.The measures will use all hits into the report for their values, they are segmented by the measure configuration and the report filter not by the dimension.
5. Add a filter to segment the report data you want in your one row.
